THE FOUNDING AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNIVERSITU OF THE VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS (1980-1993)

          

 In the early days, a course in Painting and Sculpture was started. That was in the year 1892 at Maradana Technical College. Later it was brought to the Heywood Building, Colombo 07. It was called the Government College of Fine Arts. Later, those courses were started at Albert Chandrawankaya No.21 to teach  music and dance subjects. Accordingly, separate principals were appointed for these three courses.

  • Dance College- Mr. S. Panibharatha  
  • Music College- Mr. Layanal Bentharage 
  • Sculpture and Arts Collage- Mr. Stanli Abesinhe 

The diploma in Dance Arts began on 1952 and has been offered in five year and six year courses. only the Kandyan dance tradition was taught at that time, and only music was taught in the Hindu place of music. Later, in addition to the Kandan dance tradition, the low county added to this. This was renamed as the Government College of Dance and Drama in 1968. This was renamed the Institute of Aesthetic Studies affiliated the the University of Kelaniya in 1980. 

There was a period of directors rule between 1974 and 2005. Its first director was Mr. Thissa Kariyawasam. At this time, the Government College of Dance and Drama was absorbed into the University. It studies subjects such as Sculpture, Dance jewelry and Costume design, Guitar art, Language, Song writing, Drama and theater, Indian dance traditions, Western ballet, Hindustani music, Sinhala literature, Drum making, Indian history and concepts, Poetry creation etc. The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree has been offered sing 1978. The first class graduate in history was Mr. D.M. Mudiyanse Desanayake. Some of the students who graduated from the university lecturers. The beginnings and evolution of this University from 1993 to 1980 are as follows.

  In 2005, it was gazetted as the 15th independent university in Sri Lanka. There it became a full-fledged university. Its Sinhala and English names were different. Its English name is University of the Visual And Performing Arts. Previously, there was one department called Dance. But now it has been renamed the Faculty of Dance and Drama.        First of all,   The Chancellor was Dr. Jamesta Peiris.    The Vice- Chancellor was Mr. Sarath Amunugamuwa.       The Dean of the Faculty of Drama, Mr. Jayasena Kottegoda, inaugurated the event.  Accordingly, there were seven departments from 2005. SRI LANKAN KOLAM TRADITION.

  Kolam is a famous folk drama in Sri Lanka. The Kolam tradition is famous on the southern of Sri Lanka. It is believed that this was created by the people of the Southern province. But there is no specific time when this originated. There is a birth story here in which a Kolam was performed to appease the queen of the great king Sammatha. There are several purposes of Kolam dancing. It is used to help women get fruit, to fertilize fields and gardens, etc. Columns have a special feature.  That is, using a mask for each character.  There are various masks in this Kolam folk drama.   Satire and humor are often seen in Kolam drama.
